Why is my radiator cold at the top or bottom?
A radiator that is cold at the top but warm below often has trapped air. A radiator that is hot at the top but stays cold at the bottom may have sludge or restricted water flow. A slightly cooler lower section can be normal, particularly as the room reaches temperature. The useful clues are where the cold area sits, whether it persists and whether the room actually warms up. 13
First, check what “cold” means
Judge the radiator during a heating cycle, when the room still needs warmth. A radiator warming up or cooling down will not have the same temperature everywhere. Avoid touching hot surfaces or pipes.

These are clues, not a diagnosis. Manufacturer guidance supports different explanations for superficially similar symptoms. 135
Why a radiator goes cold at the top
Trapped air collects above the water and prevents that part of the radiator heating properly. You may also hear bubbling or gurgling. Bleeding lets the trapped air escape so water can fill the space. 6
For a conventional water-filled central heating radiator, follow its instructions:
- Switch the heating off and let the radiator cool completely.
- Protect the floor and hold a cloth beneath the bleed point.
- Use the correct radiator key to open the bleed screw slightly. Do not remove it.
- Let the air escape, then close the screw gently when water flows steadily.
- On a sealed system, check the pressure against the boiler’s user instructions. Top up only if needed and using the specified method.
- Restart the heating and see whether the cold section has cleared.
This follows Worcester Bosch’s bleeding guidance. Stop if the vent is seized, damaged or leaking. Emptying water into a bowl for ten minutes will not make it ten times more effective.
Why a radiator stays cold at the bottom
Sludge is one possible explanation. Corrosion debris and other deposits can collect inside the radiator and obstruct circulation. Bleeding removes air, so it does not wash those deposits away. 2
However, a cold bottom does not automatically mean you need a powerflush. A restricted valve or poor distribution of heating water can also leave a radiator underperforming. Balancing adjusts how water is shared between radiators, rather than removing dirt. 2
There is also a difference between a genuinely cold patch and a gradual temperature change. Water gives up heat as it travels through a radiator. Thermostatic radiator valves, or TRVs, reduce flow as the room reaches their setting. Some variation is therefore expected. A persistent cold area while the room remains chilly deserves more attention than a slightly cooler panel in an already comfortable room. 3
What you can check before booking a visit
Check that the heating schedule is active, the room thermostat is requesting heat and the radiator’s normal user control is not turned down. If it has a smart valve, check its schedule too. A satisfied thermostat can reduce or stop heat to a radiator without anything being broken. 3
Leave the capped balancing valve alone unless you know its setting and purpose. Opening every valve fully can undo the balance of the system. 7
Make a note of:
Need a Gas Safe engineer in Weston-super-Mare?
- Whether one radiator or several are affected.
- Where each cold patch sits.
- Whether the room reaches its usual temperature.
- Whether this started after heating work or draining.
- Whether bleeding helped, and how long the improvement lasted.
- Any visible leaks or repeated pressure loss.
That gives the engineer something useful to work with. “It’s doing something weird” remains a perfectly understandable opening statement, though.
What should an engineer check?
The investigation should establish whether hot water is reaching and circulating through the radiator properly. Relevant checks include valve operation, the distribution of flow around the house and evidence of contamination. The findings determine whether the answer is a valve repair, balancing, cleaning or another repair. 25
If cleaning is justified, the method should suit the system. Fernox advises an initial inspection before powerflushing, including checking for heavily corroded components because cleaning can expose existing weak points. Its procedure also includes adding protective treatment afterwards and checking the concentration. 8
Ask what evidence supports the proposed work and what the quotation includes. A cold patch is a reason to investigate, not a complete shopping list.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my radiator still cold at the bottom after bleeding?
Bleeding releases air, but it does not remove sludge or correct restricted water flow. If water appeared immediately and the lower section remains cold during a proper heating cycle, repeated bleeding is unlikely to solve it. The next step is to check circulation and the condition of the radiator. 2
Why does the same radiator keep needing bleeding?
Recurring air deserves investigation rather than endless repetition of the same fix. Note how often it happens and whether system pressure also falls. Worcester Bosch advises contacting an installer when a sealed system needs repressurising much more frequently than its normal occasional top-up. 9
What if no air comes out when I bleed it?
If water flows straight away, close the vent. There may be no trapped air at that point to release. If neither air nor water emerges, close it rather than removing the screw or opening it further. Check the system’s user instructions and arrange help if the radiator remains cold. 1
Is balancing the same as bleeding?
No. Bleeding releases trapped air. Balancing adjusts water flow between radiators so some rooms do not receive too little while others receive too much. Uneven room temperatures and radiators taking much longer to warm are reasons to consider a balancing assessment. 4
Can a new radiator be cold at the bottom?
Yes. Being new does not rule out a flow or installation issue. Ask the installer to check the valves, balancing and the model’s required connections or internal flow arrangement. A new radiator connected to an existing system should not be assumed to have a new, clean water circuit. 5
Does a cold patch mean the radiator needs replacing?
Not necessarily. Air, a valve problem or deposits may be treatable without replacement. Replacement becomes a different discussion if the radiator is damaged or badly corroded. Establish why it is underperforming before paying to replace it. 2
Do heat-pump radiators follow the same rules?
Water-filled radiators on heat-pump systems can still have air or circulation issues, but they often operate at lower water temperatures. Feeling less hot than an older boiler-fed radiator is not proof of a fault. Consider room temperature, persistent cold patches and whether the radiator is correctly sized for the system. 7
How much does it cost to fix an unevenly heated radiator?
The price depends on the diagnosis and scope. Adjusting water distribution is different work from replacing valves or cleaning several radiators. Ask for a quotation that identifies the repair, any parts, the cleaning method if needed, and what testing is included afterwards. There is no useful universal price for a symptom. 4
How can I help stop cold spots returning?
Have the cause addressed and the heating water protected appropriately after cleaning. Fernox’s guidance includes corrosion protection and checking its concentration. Also report recurring air or pressure loss rather than treating frequent bleeding and refilling as normal maintenance. 8
Need help with a radiator that only half heats up?
If you are in Weston-super-Mare or the surrounding North Somerset area, contact Kesselmann Heating & Plumbing and tell us which radiators are affected, where they stay cold and what you have already checked. That helps us discuss the appropriate next step.
